triage- n.
1. the process of sorting victims, as of a battle or disaster, to determine medical priority in order to increase the number of survivors.
2. the determination of priorities for action in an emergency.
Doctors are physicians of the body. Field surgeons are the dudes out in battle. On the battlefield they perform triage—they make diagnoses and then they make hard decisions. Following so far? Pastors are physicians of the soul. And the entire Christian life is warfare. Still with me?
Okay, put the pieces together if you can, but get this: To quote Don Chaffer, some blogs are long on diagnosis and short on cure. So you could say that one of my goals for this blog in so far as it engages the world and the church is to not be that. Charles Spurgeon says this,
“A true physician only makes incisions in order to effect cures, and a wise minister only excites painful emotions in men’s minds with the distinct object of blessing their souls.”
That’s what this blog is about: pastorally applying the scalpel for the good of souls—not because I want to impress anyone by flashing a sword around, but because I care about God’s people. And you’re right, I’m not a pastor. But I sure hope to be.
